Maine Question 6 FAILS (November 2000)- Do you favor ratifying the action of the 119th Legislature whereby it passed an act extending to all citizens regardless of their sexual orientation the same basic rights to protection against discrimination now guaranteed to citizens on the basis of race, color, religion, sex or national origin in the areas of employment, housing, public accommodation and credit and where the act expressly states that nothing in the act confers legislative approval of, or special rights to, any person or group of persons?

Madeleine and Naomi Winterfalcon, in front of the East Haven Municipal Office in Vermont, where they received their civil union certificate.

Congratulations to

Madeleine Winterfalcon
and
Naomi Winterfalcon

Madeleine Winterfalcon and Naomi Winterfalcon of Standish, Maine were united in East Haven, Vermont on August 17, 2000.  Rev. Brendan Hadash, who is a minister with the Unitarian Universalist Church in St. Johnsbury, Vermont,  officiated the civil union ceremony.  Madeleine commented, "We had no idea how great having this ritual would make us feel."  She said, "Even though it is not recognized in Maine (we live in Standish), we have received recognition (and gifts!) from our friends and family.  Thank you, Vermont!"

Editorial Note:  Naomi Winterfalcon wrote a moving letter to the Times Argus newspaper in Vermont.  You can read it here.

Martin Swinger and Brian Kaufman at the municipal office in Brattleboro, Vermont.

Congratulations to

Martin Swinger
and
Brian Kaufman

While enjoying a leisurely drive back to their home in Augusta, Maine, nationally acclaimed singer-songwriter Martin Swinger (Scrapbook, BearNaked) 'eloped' with his partner of 15 years, Brian Kaufman (a musician and psychology professor at the University of Maine at Farmington).  They wrote, "Meandering back to Maine after a concert tour in Pennsylvania and New York, we passed a house whose owner had painted "My government is gay but I'm not!" and decided at that moment to see if we could 'become union members." The first town office we came to in Wilmington had already closed for the afternoon, but the clerks kindly explained the process to us and suggested we might find the town office still open in Brattleboro. Driving madly but safely, we reached Brattleboro in time to complete the paperwork and arrange for Justice of the Peace John Burgess to perform the ceremony in his backyard as soon as he returned from his cardiac fitness class.  We enjoyed a honeymoon dinner at China Palace in Keene, NH and then returned to Zipper, our puppy waiting for us back in Maine."

Maine - State Legislature

Urge your Senator
to oppose
S.J. Res. 26!

FROM HUMAN RIGHTS CAMPAIGN:

Last night, two days before Thanksgiving, five US Senators* introduced Senate Joint Resolution 26, a harmful and divisive Senate counterpart to the anti-gay "Federal Marriage Amendment" that has been unfortunately gaining support in the House since May. This resolution seeks to amend the U.S. Constitution to discriminate against GLBT families by defining marriage as between a man and a woman.

*Wayne Allard, R-Colo.; Sam Brownback, R-Kan.; Jim Bunning, R-Ky.; James Inhofe, R-Okla.; and Jeff Sessions, R-Ala. introduced the resolution.

It is vital that you contact your Senators at their district office and urge them to oppose S.J. Res. 26! Your Senators need to hear from you while they're in their district offices throughout the month of December!

To look up your Senators and their district office phone numbers, click here or visit: http://capwiz.com/hrc/dbq/officials/

The amendment seeks to permanently deny the right to marry, as well as virtually all other forms of legal recognition to same-sex couples, including the most basic legal protections. It further seeks to circumvent the right of state legislatures and courts to make decisions on basic government-administered protections, thereby forever denying gay and lesbian Americans fundamental rights and benefits such as hospital visitation, Social Security, inheritance and health care benefits.

The opposition is gearing up with phone calls and letters and we need to do the same. Please call your Senators today!
